Smith Sayings

A Model Mother - Hannah

One of the best known and most loved women of the Bible is Hannah. In the dark days of the Judges, her light shone brightly for the Lord. She was one of the two wives of Elkanah. He loved her, but she could not bear him any children.
She prayed earnestly for a child and vowed to dedicate him to the service of the Lord. The Lord answered her prayer and gave her Samuel, who became one of the greatest leaders of Israel. In several respects, Hannah was a model mother.
She prayed fervently for a male child. Eli, the man of God, told Hannah that God would grant her petition. She must have prayed often for the child as she raised him and he grew in holy service.
The second chapter of I Samuel contains a powerful song of praise to the Lord for giving her a male child. "And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the Lord, mine horn is exalted in the Lord: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation. There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God." (I Samuel 2:1-2) She praises the Lord as a God of holiness, wisdom, strength, mercy and justice. No doubt gratitude was the habit of her life. (JHS/YGN/May 2007)
