School of the Prophets

 The School of the Prophets is a series of short meetings meant to give training to bi-vocational pastors by Pastors in a weekend retreat. It covers areas such as Sermon Preparation and Delivery, Sunday School, and Pastoral Leadership. It is sponsored by the Tennessee Baptist Convention and produced for video by the Radio Bible Hour.

These Three Classes will benefit the bi-vocational Pastor by giving him a clearer understanding of

the ministry God has given him to do. They are offered here as a free service to anyone who can benefit from them.

1. Sermon Preparation and Delivery (Dr. Dean Haun)

Part 1: The Planning for Biblical Preaching

I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;

Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

2 Timothy 4

Part 2: The Preparation for Biblical Preaching
For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.
Ezra 7:10

Part 3: The Presentation of Biblical Preaching

 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

1 Corinthians 2

2. Sunday School and Small Group Development (Gordon Donahoe)

Part 1: Sunday School: Most Everything You Wanted to Know but Were Afraid to Ask

And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Acts 2

Part 2: Sunday School Discussion

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15

3. Pastoral Leadership (Bruce Martin)

Part 1: What is Pastoral Leadership

The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being examples to the flock.

And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

1 Peter 5

Part 2: The Small Church Pastor

"One half of Southern Baptist Churches report an average attendance of less than 70 in Sunday School, and two thirds report an average of less than 102."
Lyle Schaller

Part 3: Leadership: A Biblical Perspective

And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band.
Acts 27
