Dr. J. Donald Smith

Would It Make A Difference?

For Christians, we are assured that God is constantly present with us. In the Holy Spirit, we have a constant companion. This has always fascinated me. What if we could see that companion with our physical eyes? Would that make a difference? I believe everything would change if we accepted the reality of God’s presence. What are some of the things that would change.

Our prayer would change. Have you ever heard preachers who repeat the sermon during the closing prayer. They review the main points, as if God needed reminding. They remind God of what He knows. "Lord there are people here today who are not living the life they should. Lord, you know how hard I try to reach them. Lord it says over in the book of Judges…." In other words, they are still talking to the congregation, not to the Lord. We often offer prayers in a cold stale formula, as if we are just going through the motions of a formality, rather than talking to God. I even see people who read their prayers in church. Imagine for a moment what it would be like to sit with God in the chair next to you and really tell him what’s on your mind. Imagine what it would be like to listen to Him, and let Him talk to you. All the formulas, and staleness would be gone; we would have no need to write out a prayer and read it to Him, anymore than we would write down what we wanted to say to our spouses. We would speak honestly, openly, and we would listen.

Our behavior would change. Instead of doing something we know is wrong, we would want our actions and our speech to be acceptable to Him. Gossip would be hard. Immorality would be difficult. Helping and caring for others would be easier.

Our priorities would change. We would see the difference between things which are frivolous and wasteful, and the things which have lasting importance.

Why do we live our lives, as if God were not present with us. Perhaps, He is not present with us. If we have not accepted Christ, perhaps we are truly alone. If we have made the decision to be followers of Christ, then He is our constant companion, and perhaps all we need is to be aware of His presence. The best friend you have ever had, the biggest supporter, the one who loves you more than anyone, that is the Presence that is by your side day and night. How will that change the way you live your life?
